Celebrate Independence Day with Grandma Hilda's Classic Apple Pie

A heartfelt recipe that honours family tradition and summer flavours.

Grandma Hilda's Timeless Apple Pie Recipe for Independence Day

Every summer, as the 4th of July approached, our family would gather to celebrate Independence Day with joy and togetherness. One of the highlights of these gatherings was always Grandma Hilda's famous apple pie. It was a recipe passed down through generations, a comforting reminder of family love and culinary tradition.

Grandma Hilda would begin her day early, her kitchen filled with the sweet scent of cinnamon and baked apples. She believed that using fresh, local ingredients was key to making the best apple pie. Each year, she would visit the local market to find the juiciest Bramley apples (about 1.5 kg) for her filling. These apples, known for their tartness, contrasted beautifully with the sweetness of sugar and the warmth of spices like nutmeg and cinnamon.

To begin, she would peel and core the apples, a task she entrusted to her grandchildren—an excellent way to keep them engaged in the process. As we patiently prepared the apples, Grandma would remind us of the importance of choosing just the right balance of sweet and tart fruits.

The crust was another treasured secret. Made with plain flour (approximately 250 g) and salted butter (125 g), she would mix them to a crumbly consistency before adding cold water (about 60 ml) to form the dough. With a sprinkle of flour on her countertop, she rolled the dough out with precision and care, an art she had perfected over the years. Each crust was lovingly crafted, baked to a golden hue that evoked a sense of nostalgia and warmth.

Once the filling was prepared, it was generously piled into the pie crust, topped with the second layer of pastry, and baked in the oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 45 minutes. The enticing aroma wafting through the house would alert everyone that it was nearly time to indulge.

As we sat around the table enjoying slices of the warm apple pie, with a scoop of clotted cream on the side, it was the perfect moment to reflect on family and heritage. This wasn't just a dessert; it was a symbol of gathering, love, and shared stories, a true representation of Grandma Hilda's spirit.

In recent years, people have been looking for ways to preserve family recipes. If you’re inspired by this tale, you can save it to your cookbook in Recipe Filer and create your own family memories!
