Rice recipe questions
How do I stop rice sticking to the pan?
Rinse rice thoroughly before cooking to remove excess starch. Use the correct water-to-rice ratio (typically 2:1 for long grain). Once cooked, let it rest covered for 5 minutes, then fluff with a fork. A drizzle of oil whilst cooking also helps prevent sticking.
Can I freeze cooked rice and how do I reheat it?
Yes, freeze cooked rice in portion-sized bags for up to one month. Cool completely before freezing to maintain texture. Reheat thoroughly from frozen in the microwave with a splash of water, or steam on the hob until piping hot throughout. Use within 24 hours once defrosted.
What's the difference between risotto rice and regular long grain rice?
Risotto rice varieties like arborio or carnaroli contain more starch, creating the characteristic creamy texture when stirred. Long grain rice like basmati stays separate and fluffy. You cannot substitute long grain rice in risotto recipes as it won't achieve the proper consistency.
