Never includes: added salt, salty stock cubes, cured/processed meats, smoked foods, bananas, oranges, tomatoes (large amounts), spinach in large amounts, potatoes (unless soaked/boiled), chocolate, nuts and seeds in large amounts, dairy in large amounts, brown/wholegrain in large amounts (high phosphorus)

How we adapt: Low sodium (no added salt — use herbs, lemon, garlic-infused oil for flavour), moderate potassium (apple, berries, green beans, cabbage, cauliflower, sweet peppers), moderate phosphorus (small portions of protein, white rice/pasta over wholegrain). Include the disclaimer: 'Renal diets are highly individual — readers must confirm portion sizes and ingredient choices with their renal dietitian.'
